1989 Fleer Baseball Hobby
1989 Fleer consists of 660 cards. Card fronts feature a distinctive gray border background with white and yellow trim. Cards are again organized alphabetically within team. Unlike previous year's, however, where the World Series champion (in this case the Dodgers) would be lead off the set, the entire set is ordered by 1988 regular season record with Oakland (the '88 World Series runner-up) going first.
The last 33 cards in the set consist of SuperStar Specials (628-639), Major League Prospects (640-653), and checklists (654-660). Rookie Cards in this set include Craig Biggio, Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, and John Smoltz.
The '89 Fleer set is known for the sheer amount of errors and variations. Approximately half of the California Angels players have white rather than yellow halos. Certain Oakland A's player cards have red instead of green lines for front photo borders. Checklist cards are available either with or without positions listed for each player.
